Dev Update Part 1!

Happy weekend everyone! Due to a wild week for both Bed and I, we will be delaying any site changes and fixes until tomorrow. However, we do have a bit of an update for you all today in order for you to prepare for changes in the November 13th dev update.


A few weeks ago, we posted a “where we’re headed” post. Since then, we’ve planned even further into the future. This post outlines some upcoming changes that we want to bring to your attention. Note that we’re focusing on the short term… as in the next dev update on November 13


Changes Coming on November 13th

✨ Mindset

Before we get into the changes, we’d like to share a bit about our mindset and how we came to the decision to make these changes. In a lot of ways, Eqcetera has unlimited gameplay, lending well to its twist on the word “etcetera” which means “a number of unspecified additional persons or things” or in a word, unlimited. 


In reviewing gameplay, we realized that a lot of these unlimited possibilities are actually limited to genetics and horse colors. The game itself is really only played one way: by showing. If you show, you do well. If you don’t show, you could become a very poor player unless you have another source of income like artwork. 


We’re going to be revealing A LOT of plans on how to achieve truly unlimited gameplay with Eqcetera. One theme that has become apparent is the focus on making horses more unique and more of a living, breathing creature than a pixel that you can easily retire without another thought. However, there are a few foundational steps that we need to make first. The rest of this update outlines what will happen in the next update. We don’t want to blindside you with these.


🐴  Transport Cap

A while back, we mentioned that we will be adding a transport cap.  This is meant to slow the number of massive foundation pulls and the number of horses sitting in transport. As of now, we have multiple players with 10,000+ horses in transport and 100+ with 500 or more in transport. This is not sustainable for gameplay, economy, nor server space. 


This is a soft cap. This means that even if you are at your limit, you can still breed more horses and not have any penalty. However, if you are at your limit, you can not purchase horses from the Foundation Store, Rescue Center, Horse Market, or other players. You also cannot receive any horse transfers. 


🌟  Breeding Cooldown & Minimum Age

There has been a lot of talk about making breeding cooldown for mares more realistic to real life. We know that the opinion here is quite split down the middle. The tipping point for us was the fact that this change would not only be more realistic, it would decrease how many foals a horse can have in its lifetime. This will also help slow the rising number of horses ingame and promote a better game economy. 


Successful Breedings

In the next update, mares will have a 1-week cooldown for successful breedings. This reflects the timing RL mares can foal. Stallions will increase to having 48 hours cooldown. 


Failed Breedings

Also, failed breeding cooldowns will be 6 hours for both stallions and mares to simplify timing for you when re-breeding. Note, freezing horses also freezes cooldown!  


Minimum Breeding Age

Horses will need to be 3 years old instead of 2 years old to breed. 


We know this is quite a bit to prepare for but we wanted to give everyone time to adjust and prep their herds for any changes you all may need to do. Again, these changes have not been added in this update but will be added on November 13th.

@Acoustic, I cannot agree more with the annoying failed breedings. I just wasted so much money on failed breedings with other players studs. I will get 5 failed breeding sin a row and the only way to stop the chain is to reload the page completely. It's extremely frustrating. If you guys plan to increase breeding times that's fine but please lower the amount of failed breedings to counteract it. It's getting to be majority failed. 

 I have nothing to add on the breeding times as i've posted my opinion through my other account.

I'm so excited for all of the changes that are coming our way! As for the week long breeding cooldown, I personally 100% agree. The cooldown will greatly cut down server space taken up by mediocre horses and foals and just adds a sense of realism to the game. As for the color breeders who are concerned, I've encountered other color breeders on different sims who have absolutely no issue with a week long or even longer cooldown. Breeding shouldn't be a guarantee to give you the perfect foal the first time, that's part of the fun!

Now, For the cooldown I was wondering if maybe it could be changed to be a one week gestation time, and then the mare could be bred the rollover after she gives birth or the same day. That's just a small suggestion though to make it more realistic instead of foals just popping into existence the same day while still maintaining the one week period of having to wait to breed again. 

Now I want to address and expand upon what Qeni was saying about the horrid stud and brood economy right now. Only a small handful of players actually put their horses up for stud or brood, and while I get that there a good amount of people who prefer to keep their lines private, I feel like this shouldn't be an issue in a breeding sim. I personally love breeding out to different lines, it only provides more genetic diversity, lessens the chances of inbreeding, and it's just a good way to get the economy moving between players. The fact that I can only pick from a small bunch of horses in the public studs and broods search is ridiculous, and I'm sorry, but most aren't even that of good quality when it comes to BS most of the time. With all of the people here who have thousands upon thousands of horses, there should be WAY more horses to choose from. I think most people can agree that they don't put their horses up for stud or brood is because it's too tedious and time consuming to actually go through all of their horses. I know by now a lot of you have heard me say this, but I and other players should not have to rely on asking players on Discord, an application outside of the game, if we can breed with their horses just to keep our stables alive. There seriously needs to be some sort of feature that allows players to put up mass horses for public or even private stud and brood, or there needs to be a much bigger incentive than EQD or ingots to do it, because people clearly aren't using this feature when it should be heavily utilized in a game such as this. Back on V1 it was clear that there were plenty of horses available on the stud market, and that was when the game was seriously dying and had maybe 10 people online on a good and busy day. How is it that there are far less horses available now that the game has developed so much and has many more active players? Sorry for the rant, but this is seriously my only gripe about the game that I think really needs to be addressed. This is a breeding game, make it so that more people can have access to the resources needed for doing so.

After thinking over it so more, I suppose the two day cooldown for stallions won't be as annoying as I had originally thought. I'm just going to have to put my horses up for breeding before I intend to use them for myself, will probably put them up publicly from 15-17 and then use them privately to insure I get at least two good foals out of them. 

I agree with Sojourn that there needs to be something that helps with more studs and broods being available for public breeding. I personally think a big factor is that it's difficult to find a horse that is even able to be bred in that moment. Most are hungry, others are on cooldown. The hunger thing is a big annoyance for me because I am most active on the site right after rollover so most horses haven't been fed yet. I really believe that health shouldn't be a factor when breeding to outside horses, maybe just remove studs/broods from the search if the owner hasn't been online in 3ish days?

Please consider removing failed breeding attempts and also consider maybe moving back the cooldowns in phases to help people adjust? 

EDIT: I do want to reiterate  that I am excited for the extended mare cool down. IIt's actually going to make breeding easier and less overwhelming. Right now I'm encouraged to breed as many foals as I can once my horses hit a certain age and retire the bad foals. This will still be the case but it'll be much less foals which will cut down the amount of time I have to spend breeding and sorting. Also, will make breeding more exciting imo when you get an amazing foal.

I would definitely support (and utilize) a mass brood/stud tool. I have lots of horses that I am totally open to listing for brood and stud but it's very time consuming to actually list them. 

That being said, always DM me if you see a horse you like and want to breed to. I will never say no. :)

Hi ! 

I'm really happy with the new cooldown for mares and breeding at 3YO wich make the game more realistic but so disapointed with stallions cooldown. If 7 game days is 1 year, it means that a stallion can have only 3 foals per year ? It's far from reality.

Yay!  These changes come into effect on my birthday. :)  

I like the changes to transport and breeding cooldown.  No one needs 10k plus horses in their transport.  At that point isnt that more of a hoarding situation than gameplay?

As for the breeding cooldown, I don't see where color breeding is any more or less important than quality breeding. A week wait is just as good for color breeders than those that breed for high ps and tb's.  The ps/tb breeders wait until the last minute to breed and a week cooldown really limits how late they can wait to breed.  I don't see where a color breeder really needs to breed a horse over and over and a PS/TB breeder doesn't.  The week cooldown is perfectly fine for both quality and colour breeders.  I don't see what all the hubbub is.   There are so many other horse games that makes the breeding cooldown take way longer than even a week to 48 hours.  

I love this game and I want what is best for the game and the server.  I'm not so selfish that I can't alter my gameplay for the betterment of the game and community.
